Mission

 

 

The International Public Policy and Management Institute, housed at the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, is the first educational institute established at the University of Kentucky to provide international professionals with various opportunities to advance themselves as global experts. The Institute links the academic and professional expertise of faculty, researchers, and alumni to the needs of international professionals in business, government, and public organizations around the world. The Institute can draw on an interdisciplinary faculty, with expertise in public policy, public administration, economics, business, management, international relations, and political science, and applies academic advances in those fields to the analysis of public policies and management issues in a global setting. The Institute currently concentrates on professionals, government officials, and employees of local public enterprises in Asia, but will expand its focuses to other countries to meet the needs of their professionals.

 

The International Public Policy and Management Institute offers a one-year Professional Certificate program for international professionals in the field of public policy and government. The Certificate program is designed to provide international professionals with an academic, professional and cultural experience in the United States. The program consists of the following four core components:

  • Independent Academic Studies and research on current issues in disciplines relevant to participants’ professions
  • Comprehensive English language programs for formal and practical communication
  • Professional field trips to private and public enterprises, and government agencies
  • Understanding of American culture

In addition to providing education programs tailored to the needs and situations of international professionals, the International Public Policy and Management Institute also strives to achieve these objectives:

  • Building an extensive formal partnership with universities and government entities abroad to promote global education opportunities at UK
  • Providing support for the curricular activities of UK faculty and students within a global perspective
  • Enhancing exchange student programs or internships abroad
  • Generating research funds for UK graduate students and scholars
  • Supporting joint faculty research and travel opportunities abroad
  • Supplementing seminars and workshops related to foreign countries
  • Providing a focal point for interaction and exchange on topics of common interests between the UK community and the political, economic, and business circles abroad
  • Promoting the University and the state of Kentucky to foreign countries for future academic and business relationships
  • Serving the UK community and the people of Kentucky by acting as a resource for information on foreign countries

As it develops, the International Public Policy and Management Institute will not only provide quality education to international professionals; it will also offer foreign experiences to the people of Kentucky as well as UK faculty and students. The Institute fosters links between the UK community and the state of Kentucky and universities and government abroad to build a global network in Kentucky.
