Below is a sampling of the internships our students engaged in during the summer of 2010.

D'Arcy Robb “During my first year at the Martin School I worked part-time at UK’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The program provides a link between FEMA and local grant applicants, but many applicants found the process confusing. To help ease that confusion, I filmed, wrote, and edited a video about the program.” –D’Arcy Robb

Jill Thompson “I organized and planned special events and conferences for young leaders, professionals, ambassadors, diplomats, and politicians in Berlin, Germany. The topics of the events included globalization, cultural diplomacy (soft power), and interdependence.” –Jill Thompson

Tom Middleton “I draft bills and write reports for Kentucky legislators. I communicate with leaders and officials in all types and levels of government.” –Tom Middleton

Shelly Sellwood-Davis “Build-A-Bed provides beds, mattresses, and bedtime bags (toothbrushes, sheets, pillows, stuffed animals, etc.) to children across the state of Kentucky. In preparing for the 24-hour Build Blitz project, I served as the fundraising chair to collect all financial donations, apply for grants, and collect in-kind donations.” –Shelley Sellwood-Davis

Andrew Hedrick “I work for the Fayette County 4H program and used this to fulfill my internship. My project was to find better ways to market the services of the program to the Lexington community.” –Andrew Hedrick

Sarah McQueen “I was given the opportunity to handle all Human Resources for Assisted Living. I also took on a managerial role, handling the staff scheduling, purchasing, and inventory systems.” –Sarah McQueen

Leslie Curtis “I worked with the city boards and commissions to organize projects, update databases, create and create web pages. I also created an online training program.” –Leslie Curtis

Kevin Klosterboer “I researched some programs and policies that United Way of the Bluegrass is supporting to estimate the effectiveness of their support. For example, I estimate the multiplier effect of tax returns received by Central Kentuckians through Central Kentuckians for Economic Empowerment Program (CKEEP), a program supported by United Way.” –Kevin Klosterboer

Jonathan Hollinger “As the aide to a city councilman, I managed constituent relations, performed policy research, and served as a liaison to various city agencies and partner organizations.” –Jonathan Hollinger

Lindsay Griffith “As the Summer Tutoring and Outreach Coordinator, I managed a large team of volunteer tutors along every step of the way, from lesson-planning to conflict-resolution. I assisted in the implementation of outreach programs in two local elementary schools and ultimately worked to restructure the Tutoring Program into a more effective and productive design.” –Lindsay Griffith
